Though my visit was brief, Kazakhstan made a strong impression on me as a ‘soft landing’ into Central Asia. The capital, Almaty feels more European than Kazakh with its anachronistic Soviet structures juxtaposed by modern architecture and manicured parks. The absolute highlight for me was exploring Issyk Lake, a favorite of Nikita Khrushchev too, which I had entirely to myself.
